István Ujhelyi
Istvan Ujhelyi graduated from the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences of the University of Szeged in 2002.
He joined the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) in 1993 where he has served in many leading positions.
He was State-Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development (2006-2009) and State-Secretary in Prime Minister’s Office (2009-2010) and in the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development.
Elected MP in the Hungarian National Assembly from 2002 and Deputy Speaker between 2010-2014.
Chair of the National Tourism Committee (2006-2010).
After the EP elections in 2014, he became Chair of Tourism Task Force in the TRAN Committee where he served as Vice-Chair.
In 2019 he is re-elected as MEP, and Vice-Chair of the TRAN Committee.
During the past years he has initiated tourism related programmes, as EU-China Tourism Year 2018, and European Capital of Tourism project, aka “European Capital of Smart Tourism”.
He is Founder and President of Europe-China OBOR Culture & Tourism Development Committee, 2016 and Political Mentor of the FreeInterRail-programme (DiscoverEU).
In 2018 he was appointed as special ambassador of the UN World Tourism Organisation. He is founder and president of the Confucius Institute in Szeged (Hungary) established by the University of Szeged and Shanghai International Studies University.
He is Member of the Governor body of the Mediterranean Tourism Board in Malta. Dad of four daughters and two sons.

Istvan Ujhelyi si è laureato alla Facoltà di Giurisprudenza e Scienze Politiche dell'Università di Szeged, in Ungheria, nel 2002.
È entrato a far parte del Partito socialista ungherese (MSZP) nel 1993, ricoprendo svariate posizioni dirigenziali al suo interno.
È stato sottosegretario di Stato presso il Ministero del governo locale e dello sviluppo regionale (2006-2009) e sottosegretario di Stato presso la Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri (2009-2010), e presso il ministero del Governo locale e dello sviluppo regionale.
È stato eletto deputato all'Assemblea nazionale ungherese dal 2002 e ha ricoperto la carica di vicepresidente tra il 2010 e il 2014.
È stato Presidente del Comitato Nazionale del Turismo (2006-2010).
Dopo le elezioni europee del 2014, è diventato presidente della task force sul turismo nella commissione TRAN, ricoprendo il ruolo di vicepresidente.
Nel 2019 è stato rieletto eurodeputato e vicepresidente della commissione TRAN.
Negli ultimi anni ha avviato programmi legati al turismo, tra cui l’Anno del turismo UE-Cina 2018, e il progetto Capitale europea dello smart tourism.
È fondatore e presidente del Comitato per lo sviluppo della cultura e del turismo OBOR Europa-Cina, 2016 e political mentor del programma FreeInterRail (DiscoverEU).
